Float Tube Derby Recap - June 1, 2013
The 2nd event of the 2013 Friends of Castaic Lake Float tube Bass Derby got underway on June 1st, 2013. The day started out warm and smoky as the Powerhouse Fire in the hills above the Upper Lake was well into it's second day. Smoke drifted down to the Lower Lake off and on all day as the fire began to rage at midday. All went well for us, though, as we were several miles from the fire and our event went off without a hitch. 33 tuber braved the heat and weedbeds to compete on this day. Here are top ten finishers:
1. Phillip Emery-16.06 lbs (only limit of the event)!
2. Chad Emery-12.18, 6.23lb 2nd big fish
3. Vince Amparan-11.32, and event big fish of 6.61
4. Adrian Gonzalez-9.19
5. Touly Jasengnou-8.93
6. John Valerio-7.78
7. Pheng Cha-7.05, 5.11 lb 3rd big fish
8. Mong Xiong-4.77
9. Vince Chmelsky-4.41
10. Doug Mathias-4.14 (Power teams lure big fish winner)
Participants reported catching their fish on a variety of baits, everything from Frogs to worms. Some even caught fish with Power team lures, as there was a side pot for the biggest fish caught on one of these baits, which was won by Doug Mathias. Everyone was treated to a bbq lunch afterwards, prepared by Pete Carissosa and Company.
